Dear Parents & Families,
We hope everyone had a restful 3 day weekend. First and foremost we would like to say thank you for all the wonderful gift cards, candies, and Valentine’s Day cards we received at our Valentine’s Day party last Thursday. Also, thank you to everyone who helped run stations or brought food for crafts / snacks. We couldn’t have done it without you! Students very much enjoyed themselves and had such a great time with all the really cool and fun stations.
We would also like to thank those who came out to lead or help during Culture Day this past Friday. Students really loved learning about all the different traditions, food, and music each culture had. Many of our students were left with ‘wonderings’ after our rotation was over and wanted to spend more time learning. Each student received a fictitious passport book to record information in as they went around to each table, these were sent home on Friday. We encourage you to ask your student about their experience and have them show you their passport book.
Next week, February 25, 2019 is Read Across America week. To honor our love for reading students will be engaging in theme activities throughout the duration of the week. Please see the list below for some details on what to wear or bring each day:
Monday(2-25): Wear red to show your love of reading
Tuesday(2-26): Wear a shirt someone can read
Wednesday(2-27): Dress as your favorite book character
Thursday(2-28): Wear Stripes
Friday(3-1): Bring in your favorite book to read with others.

Maybe you lived in that country or maybe you are from there- we would love to hear from you! If you think you might be interested in being part of our Simis Culture day, please click on the link below and sign up.  If you have questions, please contact the IB coordinator Melissa Powers.(mpowers@madisoned.org)
Furthermore, our children at Simis have been really enjoying their library books!  Children can now check out three books which leads to more shelving in the library.  If any parents have an hour or two and could come in each month to help shelf, it would be very greatly appreciated.  Please feel free to email the librarian, Jessie Spalding, Jspalding@madisoned.org if you can help.  A super great time to pop in is at end of day before you get your child, too!  Thank you in advance!!

Dear Parents and Families,
We would really like to thank you for the wonderful gift cards, candies, and other individualized presents you gave us.  It really means a lot to us. We hope you all have had a wonderful winter break. Mrs. Abel spent most of the time watching Netflix shows and relaxing with books and dogs.  Mrs. Couch also relaxed a lot but then went to California to visit with family for a couple of weeks. We are eager to start this new year and to meet with you all during student-led parent teacher conferences.  If you have not signed up for a conference yet please email me and we will contact you to set up a time. Students worked on reading about and researching more about an explorer before the year ended but not all students finished the presentation.  We are supposed to present on our explorers this week. Please talk to your child and see if you can help with their slideshow if they are not finished. We would like to welcome a new student this week. We are happy to have Raphy join our class! Let’s all make this year one to remember!  Happy New Year!

Dear Parents and Families,
This last week, we finished MAP Testing in both reading and math.  I will be sending you results via email. I am very proud of our students.  They worked hard and most showed growth. As a class, our group showed more gains in math than in reading which is a surprise since we had some struggles getting the MAP Math test started.  Students often see problems they have never learned on these tests but that’s because they want to see how high their understanding really is. In math, this intrigued many kids and had students wanting to learn more after the test.  This is very exciting to me as a teacher and I hope to have more small groups to discuss different math concepts. In reading, students couldn’t really say what was challenging just that it was a lot of reading. We will work on building stamina and continuing to answer challenging questions about the text.
This week, we will be learning about some different holidays around the world and doing some fun activities in class. We will have a Winter Celebration on Thursday afternoon and get to cheer on our classroom spelling bee champions Mia and Matthew in a spelling bee with other 3rd graders on Friday.   We are also going to start more social and emotional learning with a program called 5 Radical Minutes. This program will help increase communication. We should find that after using this program for a while we will see students listening more radically, reflecting more quietly, and responding more thoughtfully. This proactive, research-based approach is transforming lives and building bridges between students, parents, and staff alike. We will get materials together this week then officially start when we return from Winter break.  I will let you know how it goes and you can see if you notice a difference at home. It’s going to be a fun filled week!  Happy Holidays!
