For homework that your child is doing each week look at News and Announcements.
Homework plays an important role at Madison Simis Elementary School, helping children to learn the skills they need to be successful throughout their school careers. Homework provides a link between home and school, and offers an opportunity for children and parents to learn together.
Homework provides students with the opportunity to:
PARENT’S ROLE: The parent’s role in homework is to be supportive of the student. Provide a study place at home that has good lighting and is free from noise or distraction. You should be available to your child so that you may clarify, direct, and encourage him/her. If your child consistently spends more than the recommended total daily time on homework, please contact the child’s teacher.
Third Grade: (recommended time 25-35 minutes)
Homework time will vary from student to student. This is due to the different study habits and skills each student has. Students should plan for occasional long-term assignments.
Individual Reading
This year your child will be responsible for reading 20 minutes each night. This can be a book of their choice. Please initial and record the number of minutes read each night in the parent signature/comments box on your child’s green sheet. In an effort to keep reading more engaging, please continue to check your email for a weekly Seesaw challenge. We encourage parents to ask comprehension questions during/after your child is reading. We believe it is beneficial for your child to read both silently and aloud to practice fluency. Your child may substitute books for the online reading Red Bird.
Math
Every Monday through Thursday your child will have a Math 20/20 book that has challenging math questions about various math standards, MyMath practice, or other math games. If your child doesn't bring home math homework on the rare occasion that we had an assessment or missed the math lesson then students are expected to practice multiplication flashcards or math online with Xtramath or Freckle.
Literacy, Social Studies or Science
On occasion, students may also have other homework that's related to the learning we are doing in class. Students should be spending no more than 35 minutes to an hour on homework each night.
Homework provides students with the opportunity to:
- Accept responsibility and develop self-discipline
- Practice and maintain skills taught at school
- Achieve mastery of particular concepts
- Develop skills in working independently
- Develop research skills
- Learn to organize and budget time
