For homework that your child is doing each week look at News and Announcements.

Homework plays an important role at Madison Simis Elementary School, helping children to learn the skills they need to be successful throughout their school careers.   Homework provides a link between home and school, and offers an opportunity for children and parents to learn together.

Homework provides students with the opportunity to:
  • Accept responsibility and develop self-discipline
  • Practice and maintain skills taught at school
  • Achieve mastery of particular concepts
  • Develop skills in working independently
  • Develop research skills
  • Learn to organize and budget time

PARENT’S ROLE:  The parent’s role in homework is to be supportive of the student.  Provide a study place at home that has good lighting and is free from noise or distraction.  You should be available to your child so that you may clarify, direct, and encourage him/her.  If your child consistently spends more than the recommended total daily time on homework, please contact the child’s teacher.
Third Grade:  (recommended time 25-35 minutes)
Homework time will vary from student to student.  This is due to the different study habits and skills each student has. Students should plan for occasional long-term assignments.

Individual Reading

I will assign reading homework in packets to students each week.  The packets will go home on the Friday before the week starts.  This work has a passage to read, five multiple choice questions and three written answers, plus an additional worksheet at the end for spelling practice.  Please make sure that your child has good chapter books to read as well.
Each night your child is responsible for reading for at least 20 minutes per night, Monday-Thursday.  At least once a week ask what your child's reading about, ask questions about what they tell you.  You may substitute books for the online reading site I-Ready.

Math
Every Monday through Thursday your child will have a Math 20/20 book that has challenging math questions about various math standards.  If your child doesn't bring home math homework on the rare occasion that we had an assessment or missed the math lesson then students are expected to practice math on Xtramath or on the ALEKS.com site at home.

Literacy, Social Studies or Science
On occasion, students may also have other homework that's related to the learning we are doing in class.  Students should be spending around 35 minutes to an hour on homework each night.
