________________________Meet Mrs. Abel___________________________ Background: I was born and raised in Tucson, AZ with my grandparents. My grandmother was a kindergarten teacher at my elementary school. I spent many afternoons helping her in the class and inspiring to be an educator. Education: I went to the teacher college at University of Arizona for my undergraduate studies. I obtained a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education where I focused my studies on Early Childhood. In 2005, I got a Masters degree in Elementary Education with a focus on reading intervention. I am endorsed as a reading specialist, early childhood instructor, and English as a Second Language instructor. I am certified to teach Elementary Education Kindergarten through 8. I enjoy learning and continue learning with various professional development courses including Kagan Cooperative Learning, Thinking Maps Training, STEM Instruction, and Write From the Beginning. Experience: I have been teaching since 2000 (19 years). I have taught kindergarten, second, third, and fourth grade. Family: My husband John and I have been married for 10 years. I have a step-son named Kyle just moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia after serving nine years in the Navy. We have four dogs named Bella, Taquito, Blanca, and Barley and one bird named Verde. Our classroom also has a frog named Tater Tot. Outside of School Interest: I am an avid outdoor woman. I love camping, hiking, canyoneering, and kayaking. I enjoy volunteering for cleanups, trail maintenance and other preservation projects. I also enjoy coffee, chocolate, and books in my past time (preferably all at once).
