Most students have completed our Map Math and Reading tests. I will send an electronic version of the results so you can see it in color. I find that this helps me understand what I am looking at a little better. Please discuss the results with your child and think of ways to grow academically. Goals could be reading more chapter books, learning more about geometry, expanding vocabulary, etc. Forbes magazine says that goal setting guides attention forward in the right direction and promotes self mastery. We should all try to set goals for ourselves more. If you have questions about the information I email please let me know. However, also know we will talk about goals at our first parent teacher conferences.
Book orders are due this Friday. If you order books it helps Mrs. Couch earn points toward books for her own classroom and helps earn books for our classroom. Students are more motivated to read when they have books that they have chosen.
Thanks and have a wonderful week.
Learning at a Glance:
Math: Students are moving into addition with regrouping. We will be working on addition of up to 4-digit numbers. This Friday, we will have an addition Chapter 2 test. We know that we are working fast but we have a lot of content to cover. These standards will be revisited all year long in spiral review so if they don't get it right away they have time.
Writing: Students will be starting a narrative paper on their summer break. Students will brainstorm ideas and start creating their plan for writing.
Reading: Students will be reading about traditions in different cultures. Students will listen to stories and fables and sequence these stories.
Social Studies: Students will be looking at the Greek contributions to art and will create their own modern day Mosaic work.
Science: Students will be making observations of mock rocks and drawing them in science books. Students will then break these rocks apart to discover what minerals are in rocks.
Homework: New homework packets will go home on Monday, Aug 20. The packet includes reading and spelling practice. For math, homework will go home nightly. Expect homework on Monday (Lesson 5), Tuesday (Lesson 7), Wednesday (Lesson 8), Thursday (Review for Friday test) this week.
