Thanks so much to all the parents that were able to attend the Back to School Night Wednesday, August 9th. Parents please try to turn all of the paperwork by this Friday, August 18. I wanted to mention a few things that I realized I forgot to when we met.
- First PATS meeting will be this Wednesday, August 16th. If you want to learn more about what it means to be a part of an IB school please try to attend this meeting. The PATS meetings will be held in the library at 6pm.
- Changes to the cafeteria dues: In the past, there were stamps given to students who needed lunch money and notices sent home in green folders. In order to be more private the school will not be doing this anymore. Late notices will be mailed to homes instead. All students will be able to order "A La Cart" items even if they do not have money in their accounts. As a parent, you have the option of disallowing "A La Cart" options from being purchased if you contact the school cafeteria. This has been utilized by parents when they find that some students will buy two snack items like chips and pop tarts and won't eat their meal. All of these extra items can add up quickly if not monitored.
- Dine Out at Flowerchild on August 21st - 5pm to 9pm, part of the proceeds go to our school.
- BYOD starts now! I am requesting a grant from our PATS program for an online reading program called Raz-Kids. I want students to get students logged in to our private server and there are math games students can start using now to help with math fluency.
What we are learning this week:
English Language Arts: We are starting our first narrative called, "My Summer Glasses". Students will elaborate on 3 things that they did last summer to write about. In reading, students are learning about story elements and how we sequence a story. Reading strategies we are review are visualization and predicting.
Math: In math, we are moving into addition. Students will learn various ways to add three-digit numbers. By the end of this week, students should be able to add in at least two different ways.
Science: We are starting an investigation into the physics of sound. Students will be listening to different objects to discriminate between them and making a code with sounds.
Social Studies: In our second week of school, we will still be going over classroom and school expectations. We will be reviewing PBIS expectations around the school with a passport. Then, in class we are going to discuss culture and how it affects civilizations through time.
